The Yellowstone Duttons have been farmers for generations, and the latest patriarch is John Dutton III, played by Kevin Costner. But what about his children? What does the future of Yellowstone look like? Well, they're an interesting group to say the least, and they have plenty of history to delve into. Let's seeDutton's entire family tree w 1883, 1923 w Yellowstone.
The founder of the Dutton Ranch with his wife, James Dutton himself (played by Tim McGraw). After the Civil War, James goes to the Westward Expansion where he lays the foundation for the Dutton Ranch, which would later appear in the 1923 and Yellowstone sequels. Although his family manages to gain a foothold in Montana, it has not been without tragedies, such as the death of his daughter.
Second founder of Dutton Ranch, James Dutton's wife and mother of children, Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill). Balance and courage come naturally to her, and no doubt this is the same attitude her descendants will most likely inherit. More importantly, she exudes a need to protect her growing family.
Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford), James Dutton's eldest brother, rises to the occasion to protect his family's legacy and help James' children, John Sr. and raise Spencer. With none of James's children ready or willing to take over the Dutton Yellowstone Ranch, Jacob becomes the plant's boss along with his cousins and wife Cara.
Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) runs the Dutton Ranch with her husband Jacob Dutton in place of her late brother-in-law and is from Ireland. In addition, she and Jacob Dutton are the adoptive parents of James, John and Spencer's children.
Like many people at the time, Claire Dutton was a widow and one of the strongest Duttons around. Tired and contemptuous, yes, but so would you be if you lost six children. Although she and her family initially protested against traveling west, she followed suit with her only surviving child, Mary Abel.
The last of Claire née Dutton's children, Mary Abel (Emma Malouff), was one of the members of the Dutton family on their journey west. Unfortunately, like her siblings before her, she too will lose her life, but at the hands of a traveling gang.
Elsa Dutton(Isabel May) was another headstrong woman in the Dutton family. In the first 18 years of her life, she becomes a horseman and farmer herself and plays an important role in the Dutton family settlement in Montana. Unfortunately, it comes at the cost of her life, as if the Dutton family hasn't suffered enough tragedy.
Sam (Martin Sensmeier), an official, unofficial member of the Dutton family, is a Comanche warrior. His inclusion in the Dutton family is short-lived due to the death of his wife Elsa Dutton and his reluctance to leave his homeland. These two lovers will live happily ever after, but it won't come to fruition.
John Dutton Sr. (Jan I)
One of James and Margaret Dutton's two surviving sons, John Dutton I (James Badge Dale) is a direct ancestor of John Dutton III (played by Kevin Costner). Although a youth when his family settled in Montana, he was taken into the care of his uncle Jacob Dutton, learned the ways of farming, and eventually inherited Yellowstone.
Emma Dutton (Marley Shelton) runs the Dutton Yellowstone Ranch with her husband, John Dutton Sr. Together they have Jack and John Dutton II, the latter being the father of John III. As a self-employed farmer, she maintains the fort while her husband is away to tend the cattle.
Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) has a story similar to that of her cousin Kayce Dutton. He was also a war veteran, but from World War I, and the experience haunts him. Also, Spencer is not present at the Dutton ranch like Kayce originally was, and spends his time hunting in Africa. His older brother is John Dutton Sr.
The eldest son of John Sr. and Emma Dutton, Jack Dutton (Darren Mann), runs the Yellowstone Ranch with her uncle Jacob Dutton. Jack spent the years under Jacob and became a skilled farmer who earns his birthright.
John Dutton Jr. (Jan II)
John Dutton Jr. (Dabney Coleman) there's not much to see in Yellowstone except in flashbacks. By the time the series starts, he has been dead of cancer for quite some time. He was also a farmer worthy of the Dutton name in his heyday, though he eventually retired and left Yellowstone to his son, John Dutton III.
John Dutton III
The patriarch of the Yellowstone ranch, John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) and, more importantly, one of the ranch's most dangerous owners to date. Owning the largest ranch in the USA has its advantages such as wealth and power, but also enemies. So John has no qualms about breaking the law and enforcing his moral code to ensure the safety of his farm, family, and land.
Like John Dutton II, her father-in-law Evelyn Dutton (Gretchen Mol) is long dead from a riding accident. It's a devastating blow to her husband, Jan III, and her surviving children, but more importantly, her death added to the many traumas her family feels on the show.
As Lee Dutto
Yellowstonethere would be no Yellowstone without the death of Lee Dutton - played by Dave Annable - which kicks off the show's first season. It is his death that causes friction for the rest of the family as Lee Dutton was the eldest son of John Jr. and Evelyn Dutton and lined up to inherit the family farm. Without Lee, a new heir has to be chosen, and it's full of drama!
John and Evelyn Dutton's only daughter, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), is a shrewd businesswoman and a very loyal member of the Dutton family. While seemingly uninterested in the ranch itself, if anyone can assure her family's well-being comes first, it's Beth and her entrepreneurship. While her love for her family runs deep, there is one person she almost always disagrees with: her brother Jamie.
Jon and Evelyn Dutton's son, James Dutton (Wes Bentley), a Harvard law graduate. There is much controversy surrounding the Duttons and Jamie, as Jamie actively works to undermine his family and go against their best interests, only to occasionally help them. All these upheavals reveal one undeniable truth: Jamie is a deeply conflicted person and sometimes takes his frustration out on others, especially when Beth is involved.
The youngest son of John and Evelyn Dutton and former Navy SEAL Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) is a little dimwitted compared to other members of his family. It is unlikely that his sister, Beth, Kayce and his dad are not on the best of terms - "estranged", you could say. However, after Kayce returns to the family business, their relationship shows signs of improvement thanks to their love of farming and the presence of Tate Dutton, Kayce's teenage son.
Hailing from the Broken Rock Reservation, Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille) often argues with the Duttons, despite being married to Kayce Dutton. After all, the Duttons now own the ancestral lands, so moods flare up from time to time. However, that doesn't stop her from being a loyal family member, especially if it means protecting her son Tate.
The youngest of the Dutton children, not by John and Evelyn, but by Kayce and his wife Monica Dutton, making him John and Evelyn's grandson. While still a child, Tate (Brecken Merrill) shows a considerable talent for ranching, so much so that his grandfather, John, sees Tate as the future of the family business. It is through this lens that John and Tate find opportunities to grow together.
