What is the most important information I should know about amphetamines and dextroamphetamines?
This drug is a drug of abuse.Tell your doctor if you have had drug or alcohol abuse problems.
Stimulants have caused stroke, heart attack, and sudden death in people with high blood pressure, heart disease, or heart defects.
Do not use this medication if you have used an MAOI in the past 14 dayssuch as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine.
Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine can cause new or worsening psychosis (unusual thoughts or behavior), particularly if you have depression, mental illness or bipolar disorder.
You may have poor circulation that can cause numbness, pain, or discoloration in your fingers or toes.
Call your doctor at once if you have:signs of heart problems- chest pain, dizziness or shortness of breath;signs of psychosis- Paranoia, aggression, new behavior problems, seeing or hearing things that are not real;Signs of circulatory problems- unexplained wounds on fingers or toes.
You may not be able to take this medication if you have glaucoma, overactive thyroid, severe agitation, moderate to severe high blood pressure, heart or coronary artery disease, or a history of drug or alcohol dependence.
What is amphetamine and dextroamphetamine?
Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine are central nervous system stimulants that affect chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.
Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine is a combination drug used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
What should I discuss with my doctor before taking amphetamines and dextroamphetamines?
Do not use this medication if you have taken an MAOI within the past 14 days.A dangerous drug interaction can occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.
You may not be able to use amphetamine and dextroamphetamine if you:
- an allergy to stimulant drugs;
- high blood pressure, heart disease, coronary artery disease (hardened arteries);
- hyperthyroidism;
- Glaucoma;
- severe anxiety, tension, or agitation (stimulants can make these symptoms worse); or
- a history of drug or alcohol addiction.
Make sure your doctor knows if you also take stimulants, opioids, herbal products, or medications for depression, mental illness, Parkinson's disease, migraines, serious infections, or to prevent nausea and vomiting.These drugs can interact with amphetamines and dextroamphetamines and cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.
Stimulants have caused stroke, heart attack, and sudden death in certain people.Tell your doctor if you have:
- heart problems or a congenital heart defect;
- high pressure; or
- Family history of heart disease or sudden death.
To make sure this medicine is safe for youTell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has ever had:
- depression, mental illness, bipolar disorder, psychosis, or suicidal thoughts or actions;
- motor tics (muscle twitching) or Tourette's syndrome;
- seizures or epilepsy;
- an abnormal brain wave test (EEG);
- kidney disease; or
- Circulatory problems in the hands or feet.
Taking this drug during pregnancy may cause premature labor, low birth weight, or newborn withdrawal symptoms. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
You must not breast-feed while using this medication.
Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice. Not every brand of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine is suitable for use in the same age group of children.
How should I take amphetamine and dextroamphetamine?
Follow all prescription label directions and read any medication guides or directions for use. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine can be addictive.Abuse can cause addiction, overdose, or death.Keep the medication in a place where others cannot reach it. It is against the law to sell or give away this medicine.
You can take this medicine first thing in the morning with or without food.
swallow thoseExtended release capsulewhole and do not crush, chew, break, or open.
If you cannot swallow a capsule whole,Open it up and sprinkle the medicine on a spoonful of applesauce. Swallow the mixture immediately without chewing. Do not keep it for later use.
Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine doses are based on weight (particularly in children and adolescents). Your dosage requirements may change as you gain or lose weight.
While using this medication, your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits.Tell any doctor who treats you that you are taking this medicine.
Your dosing requirements may change if you switch to a different brand, strength, or form of this medication.Avoid medication errors by only using the form and dosage prescribed by your doctor.
Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat and light. Track your meds. You should be aware if someone is using it improperly or without a prescription.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, but no later in the day. Skip the missed dose if it's almost night.NotTake an extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
See an ambulance or call the poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine overdose can be fatal.
Overdose symptoms may include restlessness, tremors, muscle spasms, rapid breathing, confusion, hallucinations, panic, aggression, muscle pain or weakness, and dark-colored urine. These symptoms can be followed by depression and fatigue. Other overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, seizures (convulsions), or coma.
What should I avoid when taking amphetamine and dextroamphetamine?
Do not share this medicine with another person, even if they have the same symptoms as you.
Avoid driving or engaging in hazardous activities until you know how this medicine affects you. Your reactions may be affected.
Avoid drinking fruit juice or taking vitamin C at the same time as taking amphetamines and dextroamphetamines. This can cause your body to absorb less medicine.
What are the possible side effects of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine?
Get emergency medical help if you have itsigns of an allergic reaction: hives; labored breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- signs of heart problems- chest pain, difficulty breathing, feeling faint;
- signs of psychosis- hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real), new behavior problems, aggression, hostility, paranoia;
- Signs of circulatory problems- Numbness, pain, coldness, unexplained sores or changes in skin color (pale, red or bluish appearance) in your fingers or toes;
- a seizure (convulsions);
- muscle spasms (tics); or
- changes in your vision.
See a doctor right away if you have symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as:restlessness, hallucinations, fever, sweating, tremors, rapid heartbeat, muscle stiffness, convulsions, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
Prolonged use of stimulants can affect children's growth. Tell your doctor if your child does not grow normally while using this medicine.
Common side effects can include:
- abdominal pain, nausea, loss of appetite;
- weight loss;
- mood swings, nervousness or irritability;
- fast heart rate;
- headache, dizziness;
- trouble sleeping (insomnia); or
- dry mouth.

What other drugs affect amphetamine and dextroamphetamine?
Ask your doctor before taking any medication that contains stomach acid (including Alka-Seltzer or baking soda). Some of these drugs can change the way your body absorbs amphetamines and dextroamphetamines and increase side effects.
Tell your doctor about all your current medications.Many drugs can affect amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, especially:
- lithium or another drug used to treat depression or mental illness;
- blood pressure medication;
- an anticoagulant such as Warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven;
- cold or allergy medicines that contain a decongestant;
- opioid drugs (narcotics); or
- Seizure medicine.
