Proof coins are considered to be of higher value than normal mintage. A proof coin usually has a P mintmark, this symbol is clearly visible on the reverse of the coin where it has the eagle. It is located just below the left side of the eagle. The letter P means that the coin was minted in Philadelphia.

Where is the mintmark on a silver eagle?
This depends on the type of silver eagle you have. All uncirculated coins issued by the US Mint have a mintmark showing where they were made. However, the bullion versions of Silver Eagles do not have this mint mark.
